Creating buildings that actually accomplish low energy usage requires careful attention to the building envelope details. The structural elements that are part of the building envelopes can sometimes make or break a building's energy performance. We'll address thermal bridging, foundation insulation discontinuities, identify some problem conditions (using infrared images), and present some solution options. We'll also review positive and negative sustainability aspects of concrete, wood, and steel. At the end we'll compare the attributes of "stick" (stud and purlin) construction, Structural insulated Panels, and Insulated Concrete Forms.

Learning Objectives: 

1) Discern the sustainability advantages vs. disadvantages of the most common structural building materials.

2) Compare the energy loss potential of details with thermal steel bridging, compared to an envelope with no bridging.

3) Identify structural details that can compromise a building envelope's performance.

4) Contrast the energy loss potential of different foundation and slab edge details.

5) Become familiar with the basics of Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) construction and Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction, and some of their benefits.

Green Infrastructure for Homeowners

Just a reminder that the Green Infrastructure for Homeowners Workshop is tomorrow night at 7pm at the East Fishkill Town Hall. Come learn about simple practices you can implement on your property to help mitigate stormwater. Topics presented include: native landscaping, rain barrels, rain gardens, permeable pavers and green roofs.

At the end of the evening, we will be pulling the winners of the Rain Barrel Raffle. Throughout the month, anyone attending a Watershed Awareness Month event has been able to enter into a raffle drawing to win one of eight hand painted rain barrels. Tree ID Program at Stony Kill

Calling all youngsters in Grades 2 to 5 and their parents.  Join us on Sunday, May 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. for a program entitled Can You ID a Tree?  Enjoy a walk around Stony Kill and learn about all the different kind of trees at Stony Kill and how to ID them.  Come see our tree cookie and learn how to tell how old a tree is.  Dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle.  Reservations are required by calling us 831-1617 or emailing us at foundation@stonykill.org 

Teaching and Learning in the School Garden: Theory into Practice

This course focuses on the foundations and teaching strategies of garden-based learning (GBL), and provides the tools and resources that classroom teachers and extension educators need to develop school gardening programs that are easily integrated into their school curriculum or youth program. By the end of this course, you will become a more confident and knowledgeable garden-based learning educator and program planner, and you will connect with and learn from others with the same purpose.

Events at Stony Kill

The Stony Kill Foundation, Inc. announces the opening of the 2011 Community Garden Plots at Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center on Route 9D in Wappinger Falls.  Plots are 20' by 20' and are available immediately, for a fee of $30 for the season.  Please call 845-831-1617 for an application or email us at foundation@stonykill.org.

Join us on Sunday, May 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a Family Wilderness Survival Class with instructor Shane Hobel.  This class is made up of many skills and introduces you to the scope of this subject of study and particularly the “Basic 4”: Shelter, Water, Fire & Food.  You will also experience the beginnings of Tracking, Awareness & Movement. The Dutchess Watershed Coalition and Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County are holding two additional Rain Barrel Building Workshops this Spring. 

On May 10^th at 7pm the organizations will be partnering with the Town of Pawling to host a workshop at Lakeside Park in the Town of Pawling. On June 4^th at 10am they will be partnering with the Town of Fishkill and hosting a workshop at the Town Hall in Fishkill.  At each of these workshops you will learn how to build a 55-gallon rain barrel that you will take home. The cost of the workshop is $45.

Participants will gain a strong understanding of innovative roofing technologies such as cool roofs, photovoltaic roofing, vegetative roof systems, recyclable roofing, and roofing materials manufactured with post-consumer recycled content and low VOC roofing options. AIA Continuing Education Credit is offered at this session. The Stony Kill Foundation presents a Spring Ecology Extravaganza on Saturday, April 9, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  Youngsters in grades 2 to 5 are invited to join us.  Spring has sprung! Take a look at the signs of the season with a hike around Stony Kill.  See the new baby animals. The first rain barrel building workshop of the season will be March 26^th from 10:30-11:30am at the Farm and Home Center in Millbrook. At the workshop you will learn how to build a 55-gallon rain barrel that you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. The cost of the workshop is $35 and covers the cost of all supplies.

Stormwater Retrofit Planning & Design Training

Many watersheds have experienced water quality degradation due to an historical lack of stormwater management practices or ineffective planning regulations. Stormwater retrofitting combines the processes of determining how the receiving water is currently being impacted, establish restoration objectives, and evaluate alternatives that include mitigating past mistakes and seeking creative solutions to re-establish water quality in impaired watersheds. The “Urban Stormwater Retrofit Practices” manual published by the Center for Watershed Protection will be used for site specific projects by participating design teams on actual watershed locations.  Don Lake Jr., P.E., CPESC, CPSWQ is the instructor. Registration is required. Registration deadline is March 30, 2011. Cost is $225 per person if registered by the deadline, $275 thereafter. Rain barrels are a great option to better manage
excess storm water from your roof.  The water is captured before it
picks up pollutants, and it is safe to use for watering plants.  A
rain barrel can save gardeners up to 1,300 gallons of water during the

manage storm water AND will help you build your own 55 gallon rain
barrel to take home.

The How, When, and Where of Pruning

Learn the elements of pruning evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs and how to maintain the woody plants in your garden. Bring your pruners for a discussion of proper tool selection and maintenance. The afternoon is spent outside analyzing pruning techniques. Class is held rain or shine. Please dress for the weather and bring lunch. While this class has no prerequisite, some knowledge of gardening is helpful.

when it‟s needed and general installation information.  

Each year we are inundated with seed catalogs & luring displays of seed packets at our favorite 

garden centers. Learn to base your choices on proven varieties for our local area and basic 

information such starting your own plants vs. buying, using coldframes, interplanting to
